Travel insurance is a relatively new commodity that became popular only towards the end of the 20th century. The current estimate of the cost of travel insurance range between 5% and 8% of the total travel cost. If the holiday vacation is worth about $10,000, the cost of travel insurance is at most $800. It is a substantial amount, and thus, some travelers are tempted to forego the idea of getting travel insurance at all. Getting such an insurance policy might be considered a luxury. But during the travel, some things are beyond anyone’s control. The luggage may be lost. One of the kids may get sick. The flight may be cancelled. The expenses for these unexpected incidents can be claimed when there is travel insurance. And the travelers will have peace of mind knowing that they have travel insurance. Different travel insurance coverage However, not all travelers’ insurance policies are exactly the same. For example, all travel insurance policies state that they cover trip cancellations. But the traveler must be aware that some policies cover only trip cancellations caused by sudden illness or death, airline cancellations due to weather or bankruptcy, jury duty, and emergency military duty. Some, but not all, travel insurance policies may also honor trip cancellations due to travel warnings issued by the US State Department. And few policies have the “cancel anytime” coverage, which allows the traveler to cancel anytime and for any reason. Obviously, the inclusion of this last type of coverage will drive up the cost of the travel insurance policy. But travelers have different needs. Some may need this “cancel anytime” feature while others may not. What every traveler needs, however, is a travel insurance that is affordable and will provide the coverage needed. Deciding early on the coverage of the traveler’s insurance will allow the traveler to obtain a relatively cheap travel insurance policy. But how do you decide? Research and common sense are needed. Including medical coverage in travel insurance For example, one of the most important and pressing concern during travel is the medical coverage. Going to another country is not a walk in the park. You may have a difficult time adjusting to the climate. You may get sick because of the food that you ate. You may be involved in an accident. Or you may have accidentally bumped your head against a solid wall because you were ogling scantily-dressed beautiful women. The question now is this: what type of medical coverage do you need? For longer travels, the travelers insurance must include doctor visits, as well as hospitalization. If the traveler has no healthcare coverage, it is recommended to have a comprehensive medical coverage included in the travel insurance policy. If a person has healthcare, the HMO must be consulted first on whether they can cover emergency care even when the insured is abroad. And if they do, the traveler must know the maximum number of days that the HMO will provide medical coverage. When the HMO does provide such coverage, then there is no need for a comprehensive medical coverage. Having double coverage on medical expenses is not the best way to get cheap travel insurance. There are cases, however, that the travel insurance must include the medical evacuation insurance feature. This feature covers the cost of transporting the patient from one emergency facility to another. The patient is assumed to be badly injured or terribly ill. Obviously, this feature is necessary for travelers who will be involved in extreme sports, in which the chances of being injured are high. The medical evacuation insurance is also useful for travelers who have chronic diseases and for travelers whose destinations are remote areas of underdeveloped countries, where medical facilities are insufficient to care for the traveler’s emergency needs.

Travellers or Travelers today, whether experienced or not, have unlimited choices, so why use a travel agent?
Savvy travellers or travelers, when in need of information relating to specific destinations or activities, seek out travel agents with knowledge, experience and expertise of those destinations and activities.
It is not always easy choosing a travel agent. Many agents are called specialists, but sometimes the qualification to be a specialist is a simple test run by a tourism office or tour operator. Sometimes, these tests do not require the agent to have ‘been there, done that, got the t-shirt. ‘ Some of these tests are too simple and could harm the reputation of the travel industry if allowed to continue unchecked. A ’specialist’ can mean, ‘I know the brochure product’ or ‘I have seen a training video’ or ‘I have taken a test given by a Tourism Office. ‘
If you find a specialist, ask about their expertise. Ask them if they or their colleagues have any direct knowledge, experience and expertise of where you want to go and what you want to do, after all, it is your hard-earned money.
Experts are out there. Find them locally or use the internet and then do your bookings with them. You may have to use different experts for different destinations and activities, just as you would select any other professional for accounting, legal, medical or mechanical matters, except in your lifetime you will probably (or hopefully) spend more on travel than all of the others put together.
Reality Check: “I once tried a major chain of travel centres to get 2 tickets to Mexico from Canada. I was only offered 2 airlines. I then used an internet search and came up with 5 airlines and made my bookings online. Perhaps the travel centre did not earn commission or was not able to charge a fee for the booking or did not want an ‘air only’ booking or did they only offer their ‘preferred products’ which limits client choices?” The Nomad
If you do not need an expert agent you can use the internet to find all kinds of global travel choices and then you can make your booking directly with an online agent or travel operator. If you decide to make your own bookings directly with the travel operator you should not have to pay the full retail price which has a built-in amount for commissions to be paid to sellers of their travel products. Retail agencies that have their own in-house tour products which are sold through other agencies should also be prepared to sell at a net price for a direct booking from a consumer.
It is only fair that agents and agencies earn commissions and fees from travel providers such as hotels, lodges, tours, cruises or mark up their own tour products to allow for a third-party sale. They all have overheads which have to be covered to give local consumers the convenience of local shopping and it is important to support your local businesses as long as they offer excellent pricing and service. At the same time, it is only fair that consumers who make their own bookings directly with travel operators should not have to incur this extra cost. Fair fare prices should be available for consumers who want to handle their own direct bookings.
If you are comfortable with dealing over the internet directly with the travel providers and you want to get fair fare prices you can check out a travel website that was launched in April 2008 that, for members only, offers free travel vouchers that saves them the commission or fee elements in retail travel prices. The main function of any travel agency is to, of course, act as an agent. This includes selling tickets and travel products, reservations, and so on, on behalf of one or several suppliers. Travel agents generally work with no charge to the traveler him or herself. Rather, the travel agent takes a small commission from the overall cost. Again, this isn’t added on top of the sale or anything like that. Rather, their commission is taken out of the advertised price. So why go through a travel agent? Well, besides the simplicity and convenience, the main draw is that travel agents receive tickets at significant discounts. This is pretty much how travel agencies work the world over. However, there are a few different types of travel agents… General Sales Agents for Foreign Travel Companies A general sales agent is something like a tourism ambassador. A company with its headquarters located in, say, Japan, might set up travel agency offices all around the world to encourage tourism to the country where their headquarters is located. The travel agent will still seek to find better deals for their customers (as, after all, that’s what turns a customer into a return customer), so they are not indebted to any one airline or hotel, but, they do tend to focus strictly on travel to, and within, the country where their headquarters is located. Business and Commercial Travel Agencies Most travel agencies have a department of business travel and a department of leisure travel. The needs for one traveler and the other tend to vary in a few significant ways, and so, splitting up the duties amongst a couple of departments can help to allow either department to specialize, finding better deals for business travelers on the one hand, and better deals for leisure travelers on the other. However, there are also travel agencies that specialize strictly in business and commercial travel. Incidentally, there aren’t a whole lot of agencies that restrict themselves solely to leisure travel. By Class In the United States, there are several main types of travel agencies: corporate-owned national chains, national/international franchises, membership associations — such as AAA — and independent, locally owned travel agencies with no brand or corporate affiliation. National chains will have the most consistent policies and pricing not matter where you go, and often the best international “hotline” customer service, but not always. Big-name franchises offer similar perks but different local owners can opt out of certain promotions and pricing specials. Membership-based associations are often less commission-focused since they rely on member fees. Independent agencies tend to cater to niche markets, such as assisting sports teams, church and school groups looking for inexpensive travel, and large group options.
