Interview with Candorville’s Darrin Bell

Published at 8:30 am under News

CandorvilleOne of the great supporters of the campaign to save Journeyman has been Darrin Bell, creator of the comic strip, Candorville. Journeyman has been featured in a few of the strips. In January, our own Serulous was lucky enough to get a chance to interview Darrin. The full interview is after the jump. If you like Darrin’s work, you can buy the new Candorville book, “Another Stereotype Bites the Dust.”

SaveJourneyman.net: How long have you been drawing Candorville? How long have you been drawing comic strips in general? What inspired you to create these particular characters? Do you ever base characters on people you know?

Darrin Bell: Candorville’s been nationally syndicated since 2003, but it began in 1993 as “Lemont Brown.” I drew that incarnation of the strip for the Daily Californian, UC Berkeley’s college paper, and for several black newspapers. These characters are amalgamations of people I grew up with. They represent the most ubiquitous archetypes in America’s growing minority population. Clyde Dogg ( a.k.a. “C-Dog”) is a cynical, streetwise thug who takes the easy route in life and blames others for his misfortunes. Lemont Brown is the educated intellectual who knows so much that he’s often paralyzed by his options. Susan Garcia is determined to succeed and make her parents proud, but usually at the expense of a fulfilling personal life. These are archetypes that go beyond gender or ethnic lines. They’re fairly universal. The challenge and the fun part is ensuring these archetypes don’t become stereotypes.

The way I do that is by incorporating fears, anxieties, hopes, vices, and quirks from the people closest to me. For the sake of not losing all my friends and my wife, I’ll just say all the best parts of the characters come from them, and all the worst parts come from someone else.

News: March Madness and TV Guide Poll

Published at 3:12 pm under Campaign, News

Announcing March Madness: We need your help to turn up the “fan volume” in March! We are planning a concentrated, month-long campaign to raise awareness for the effort to save Journeyman. This week, we’re asking each fan to target the press by sending at least one e-mail about Journeyman and its campaign. Our goal here is to get a large number of fans contacting the press all at once. So send an e-mail even if you’ve done so before. This will keep Journeyman fresh in the minds of the press. For press contact info, see this thread in our forums. Check back each week for more Journeyman “March Madness” events.

Vote for Journeyman: Journeyman is featured in Ausiello’s TV Guide Poll about which “bubble show” most deserves another season. Journeyman needs all the votes it can get. Get other fans to vote too!

TV Guide acknowleges Journeyman fans

Published at 2:13 pm under News

In a follow-up to the “blind item” posted by Michael Ausiello regarding the renewal of According to Jim, TV Guide has a photo gallery of shows readers want to be revived or retired.  Journeyman is featured as a show to revive. This would be a good time to e-mail Michael and let him know that Journeyman is the “bubble show” most deserving of renewal.
